Why banks turn down the self-employed

Bank personal loans are built around salaried applicants: three months of payslips, an EA form and steady EPF contributions. If you run your own business, freelance or drive e-hailing, your income may be perfectly healthy — it just doesn't arrive in the shape a bank's checklist expects.

The result is that many small business owners and gig workers are declined even though they can comfortably afford the repayments. We assess income differently: we look at the money that actually comes into your account, month after month.

Who we lend to

Applicants we regularly help include:

  • SSM-registered small business owners — shops, stalls, service businesses
  • Freelancers and contract workers — design, IT, writing, photography
  • E-hailing drivers and food delivery riders
  • Property, insurance and sales agents earning commission
  • Online sellers on Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop

How to improve your chances of approval

Self-employed applicants can strengthen an application by making their income easy to see:

  • Run business income through one bank account consistently
  • Provide 6 months of statements rather than 3 if your income is seasonal
  • Include your Form B (LHDN) or SSM registration if you have them
  • Gig workers: add the earnings statements from your platform app
  • Ask for an amount whose monthly instalment fits your average month, not your best one

What it costs

Rates are 3.88% to 12% p.a. on a reducing balance, the exact figure depending on your assessment. Your written offer shows the rate, the government stamp duty and the total repayable before you sign. There are no upfront fees — a licensed lender never asks for payment before the loan is disbursed.
